International Quran competition in Egypt's Port Said

As many as 1,745 Quran reciters and memorizers from different countries have signed up for the competition, the organizing committee said, Youm7.com reported.

It said 1,370 of the contenders are from Egypt and the rest, 375 memorizers and reciters, are from other countries.

They will compete in the first stage virtually, beginning on November 7.

After evaluation by the panel of judges, the best-performing contestants will make it to the next stage, which will be held in January 2024.

Then a selected few will compete in the finals, slated for February 2-6, 2024.

This is the first time the preliminary stage of the international Quranic event is held virtually.

Last year, participants from 41 countries competed in the final stage of the competition’s 6th edition.

Egypt is a country in North Africa with a population of around 100 million.

Muslims account for around 90 percent of the country’s total population.

Quranic activities are very common in the Muslim-majority Arab country and many of the Muslim world’s top qaris in the past and present have been Egyptian.
